Step Deck Trucking

When sourcing options for large or oversized freight, shippers should consider the versatility of step deck transportation services. Often referred to as single drop or drop deck trailers, step deck trailers are a type of flatbed featuring a rising step deck towards the front that sits above the tractor unit. Used for hauling taller shipments that can become challenging when using other variations of equipment, step deck trailers allow cargo to sit lower down, avoiding height restrictions and eliminating the need to apply for additional permits.

If your freight exceeds the legal height allowed for traditional flatbed trailers, a step deck or drop deck trailer may provide the solution. Absent of any roof or sides, the trailer bed steps down once clear of the tractor unit. A single drop trailer features a main deck allowing for an extra 20 or more inches of vertical space to accommodate heavy haul loads. A double drop employs an even lower deck with a step-up towards the rear. The lower deck reduces the centre of gravity, which assists in stabilization of top-heavy loads during transport.

Allowing for loads of up to 10’ high, without having to secure over-height permits, step deck trailers can come with retractable side curtain panels that protect from the elements of climate. Step deck transportation helps reduce safety risks, given their ability to make the process of loading and unloading much less cumbersome. Since these trailers are situated closer to ground level, forklift operators will have an easier time picking up or delivering loads – making it a much safer process for everyone involved.

STEP DECK TRANSPORTATION SERVICES

Despite being a more specialized flatbed trailer, step decks are not typically more expensive. Ideal for carrying building materials, in addition to large equipment and machinery, step deck trailers are modeled to move cargo that would push regular flatbeds over height. Basic flatbed design, combined with the versatility of a lowboy trailer, adds versatility to the conventional flatbed, making step deck trucking ideally suited for very specific types of freight.
